5-Day Merzouga Desert Tour from Marrakech: Day by Day
Day 1: Marrakech, Telouet, Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate
Your driver meets you at your riad in Marrakech around 8 a.m. First, you climb the High Atlas by the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 meters, with stops at viewpoints over terraced valleys and Berber villages. Next, you follow the quiet Ounila Valley road past the Glaoui kasbah of Telouet, famous for its carved cedar ceilings and zellige, to the kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou. You cross the river and walk up to the old granary for the classic view over the earthen village. In the afternoon, you reach Ouarzazate, with time for the Taourirt kasbah before dinner. About 4.5 hours of driving.
Day 2: The Draa Valley, Nkob and the Merzouga Desert Camp
After breakfast, you cross the Tizi n’Tinifift pass into the Draa Valley, a long ribbon of palm groves and earthen villages around Agdz, with a stop at a viewpoint over the oasis. Then, you drive east through Nkob, a village known for its many kasbahs, and the mining town of Alnif, crossing wide desert landscapes where few travelers go. In the late afternoon, you pass Rissani and reach the Erg Chebbi dunes. You leave your big luggage in the car and ride a camel for about an hour to your camp for sunset. Dinner and Berber drums around the fire end the day. About 6 hours of driving.
Day 3: A Full Desert Day with Nomads and Khamlia
Wake early for sunrise over the dunes, then return by camel or 4×4 for breakfast. Next, a 4×4 takes you across the rocky desert to a nomad family, who welcome you in their tent for Berber tea and explain how they live with their animals. Then, you visit Khamlia, a village known for Gnaoua music, and listen to a short performance of the traditional rhythms. In the afternoon, you can try sandboarding on the dunes, walk in the palm groves or simply rest by the pool. The night is in a hotel facing the dunes, warmer and more comfortable than a second night in the camp.
Day 4: Rissani, Todra Gorge and the Dades Valley
After breakfast, you leave the dunes and visit Rissani, an old caravan town whose souk is busiest on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, with its mud-walled alleys and lively market. Then, you drive west through the palm groves of Touroug and Tinjdad to Tinghir and walk along the river in Todra Gorge, between limestone cliffs about 300 meters high. In the afternoon, you continue up the Dades Valley, with its winding road and rock formations known as the monkey fingers, and check in to your hotel for dinner and a quiet evening. About 4.5 hours of driving.
Day 5: The Rose Valley, Skoura and Marrakech
After breakfast, you drive through Kalaat M’Gouna and the Rose Valley, where roses bloom in spring and cooperatives sell rose water all year. Next, you pass the Skoura palm grove, with earthen kasbahs among the date palms, and the city of Ouarzazate. Then, you cross the High Atlas again by the Tizi n’Tichka pass, with a last photo stop over the mountains and a mint tea break in a village. You reach your riad in Marrakech by early evening, completing your loop through the Draa Valley, the Sahara and the kasbah road. About 6.5 hours of driving.
