3-Day Marrakech to Merzouga Desert Trip: Day by Day

Day 1: Marrakech, Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate and the Dades Valley

Your driver meets you at your riad or hotel in Marrakech around 7:30 a.m. First, you climb the High Atlas on the N9 road, with stops at viewpoints over terraced valleys and Berber villages. At the top, the Tizi n’Tichka pass reaches 2,260 meters, and in winter the peaks are often white with snow.

Next, you visit the kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified village of red earth listed by UNESCO. You cross the river and walk up to the old granary for the view. After lunch, you pass Ouarzazate, the Skoura palm grove and the Rose Valley. In the evening, you reach your hotel in the Dades Valley for dinner. About 7 hours of driving.

Day 2: Todra Gorge and the Merzouga Desert Camp

After breakfast, you see the “monkey fingers”, rounded rocks shaped by wind and water in the Dades Valley. Then, you drive east to Tinghir and enter Todra Gorge, where limestone walls rise high above a narrow river. A short walk along the water is enough to feel the scale of the canyon.

In the afternoon, the land becomes drier as you pass Tinjdad and Erfoud, known for its fossils. Around 5 p.m., you reach the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga. You leave your big luggage in the car, ride a camel for about an hour and watch the sunset from a high dune. Dinner and Berber drums at the camp end the day. About 4.5 hours of driving.

Day 3: Merzouga, the Draa Valley, Ouarzazate and Marrakech

Wake early for sunrise over the dunes, the quietest moment of the trip. After breakfast, you return by camel or 4×4 and start the long drive west. You follow the road through Alnif and the palm groves of the Draa Valley, with stops for photos and lunch.

In the afternoon, you pass Ouarzazate and cross the High Atlas again by the Tizi n’Tichka pass. Finally, you reach Marrakech in the evening. This is the longest day, at about 9 to 10 hours of driving with stops. Therefore, if you prefer shorter days, our 4-day version splits this return into two days.
