Merzouga vs Zagora: which Sahara trip should you choose? In short, Merzouga has the big golden dunes of Erg Chebbi, while Zagora is closer to Marrakech but has small dunes nearby. Therefore, the right choice depends on your time and on what you want to see. This guide compares both, so you can book with confidence.

Quick answer: choose Merzouga if you have 3 days or more and want the classic Sahara dunes. Choose Zagora only if you have 2 days from Marrakech and accept smaller dunes. For the biggest dunes near Zagora, you need extra time to reach Erg Chigaga.

Merzouga: The Classic Sahara Dunes

Merzouga sits at the edge of Erg Chebbi, a sea of tall orange dunes. First, you ride a camel at sunset. Then, you sleep in a desert camp under the stars. Moreover, the area offers nomad visits, Gnaoua music in Khamlia and sandboarding.

However, Merzouga is far from Marrakech. As a result, most trips take 3 days and stop in the Dades Valley on the way. From Fes, it is closer, so a 2 or 3-day trip works well. Read our Merzouga desert guide for camps and activities.

Zagora: The Short Desert Trip

Zagora lies in the Draa Valley, among long palm groves. It is easier to reach from Marrakech, so a 2-day trip is possible. However, the dunes near Zagora are small. Therefore, if you dream of high dunes, Zagora can disappoint.

The big dunes of Erg Chigaga lie beyond M’Hamid, south of Zagora. They are wild and quiet, but they need a long 4×4 track and at least one extra day. For the region, see the official Ouarzazate and Zagora guide.
