Planning 7 days in Morocco? One week is the sweet spot for a first trip: enough time to see Marrakech, cross the High Atlas, sleep in the Sahara and explore the medina of Fes, without feeling rushed. This guide compares the best one-week routes, gives a detailed day-by-day plan, and explains how to choose your start city, when to go, how to get around and what to pack.

Quick answer: the classic 7-day route starts in Marrakech, crosses the High Atlas to Ait Ben Haddou and the Dades Valley, spends two nights near the Erg Chebbi dunes, and ends in Fes with a guided day and an optional trip to Chefchaouen. If you fly in and out of the same city, a loop from Fes or Casablanca works better.

Is 7 Days in Morocco Enough?

Yes. Seven days let you combine three very different worlds: a red imperial city, the desert and a medieval medina. However, you will not see everything, so choose one main direction and avoid backtracking. Moreover, a private driver saves you many hours, because buses do not link the desert and the cities easily.

7 Days in Morocco: The Classic Itinerary Day by Day

Day 1: Arrival in Marrakech

First, check in to a riad in the medina and take it slow. In the late afternoon, walk to Jemaa el-Fna square, watch the storytellers and musicians, and eat at the food stalls when the lights come on.

Day 2: The High Atlas, Ait Ben Haddou and the Dades Valley

Next, you cross the High Atlas by the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 meters. Then, you explore the kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a village of red earth listed by UNESCO, and continue through Ouarzazate and the Rose Valley to the Dades Valley.

Day 3: Todra Gorge and the Merzouga Desert

In the morning, you walk through Todra Gorge between towering limestone cliffs. In the afternoon, you reach the Erg Chebbi dunes and ride a camel to your camp for sunset. Dinner and Berber drums end the day.

Day 4: A Full Day in the Sahara

Wake early for sunrise. Then, a 4×4 takes you to nomad families, the village of Khamlia and its Gnaoua musicians, and the palm groves. As a result, you see the desert as a living place, not only as a backdrop. The night is in a hotel facing the dunes.

Day 5: The Ziz Valley, the Middle Atlas and Fes

Today, you drive north through the Ziz Valley and Midelt, then cross the cedar forest of Azrou, home to wild Barbary macaques. You reach Fes in the evening. This is the longest drive of the week, at about 8 hours. Read our guide from Fes to Merzouga for the details of this road.

Day 6: A Guided Day in Fes

A licensed local guide leads you through Fes el-Bali, one of the largest car-free medinas in the world. You see the tanneries, the madrasas and the craft quarters, which are easy to miss on your own.

Day 7: Chefchaouen or Departure

Finally, if your flight is late or the next day, take a day trip to Chefchaouen, the blue town of the Rif, about 3.5 to 4 hours away. Otherwise, relax in Fes before your flight. Our Chefchaouen guide explains the options.

Other Ways to Spend 7 Days in Morocco

A loop from Fes

If you fly in and out of Fes, a loop is ideal. You head north to Chefchaouen, follow the coast through Rabat and Casablanca to Marrakech, then cross the Sahara and return to Fes. It is a busy week, but you see four imperial cities and the desert.

From Tangier, for travelers coming from Spain

Arriving by ferry? Start in Tangier and Chefchaouen, continue to Fes, spend two nights in the Sahara, and finish along the kasbah road in Marrakech. For ferry ports and timings, see our guide from Tangier to Marrakech.

Marrakech, the desert and Essaouira

On the other hand, if you prefer shorter drives, base yourself in Marrakech. Take a 3-day desert loop to Merzouga, then add a day trip or a night in Essaouira on the coast. Read our guide from Marrakech to Essaouira.

How Much Driving Is 7 Days in Morocco?

On the classic route, expect about 1,200 km. Most days have 3 to 5 hours of driving, but the day from the Sahara to Fes takes about 8 hours. Therefore, two nights near the dunes are worth it, because they turn a rushed desert stop into a real experience.

Best Time to Spend 7 Days in Morocco

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons. In summer, the desert is very hot, so plan the camel trek for the late afternoon. In winter, the days are sunny, but the nights in the Sahara and the mountains are cold. See our guides to the best time to visit Morocco and to Morocco in winter.

Getting Around in 7 Days

A private driver is the easiest way to travel for one week, because the desert is far from the train network. Trains are great between Marrakech, Casablanca, Rabat, Fes and Tangier, but they do not reach the Sahara. Self-drive is possible on the main roads, although mountain sections, police checks and long distances can be tiring.

Where to Stay

In Marrakech and Fes, choose a riad inside or near the medina. In the Dades Valley, kasbah hotels offer great views.  the desert, a camp with private bathrooms and real beds makes the night far more comfortable. To compare deserts, read Merzouga vs Zagora.

What to Pack for a Week in Morocco

  • Light clothes for the day and a warm layer for desert nights
  • Comfortable shoes for the medinas
  • A scarf or hat for the sun and the wind
  • A small overnight bag for the desert camp
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a reusable water bottle

For the full list, see what to pack for the Morocco desert.

7 Days in Morocco with Children

A week in Morocco works very well with kids, as long as you keep the pace gentle. For example, split the long desert drive with extra stops, choose a camp with private bathrooms, and plan a pool afternoon in Marrakech or Fes. Children usually love the camel trek, the sandboarding and the souks. In addition, private transport lets you stop whenever someone needs a break. Read our full guide to Morocco with kids.

Tips for 7 Days in Morocco

  • Book open-jaw flights: arriving in Marrakech and leaving from Fes saves a full day.
  • Give the desert two nights: one in a camp and one in a hotel facing the dunes.
  • Hire guides in the medinas: a local guide in Fes or Marrakech makes the visit much richer.
  • Leave early on long days: you arrive before sunset and enjoy the light.
