Planning a 4 day tour from Marrakech? Four days is the sweet spot for the Sahara: you see the High Atlas, Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge, and you still have time to enjoy the Erg Chebbi dunes instead of rushing through them. However, our two 4-day routes use that extra day in very different ways. This guide compares them so you can choose the one that matches your flights and your travel style.
Quick answer: if you can end in Fes, book the 4-day desert tour from Marrakech to Fes. It gives you a full day in the desert and a second night near the dunes. If you must return to Marrakech, book the 4-day Merzouga desert tour from Marrakech. It is a loop through the Draa Valley and Todra Gorge with no driving day longer than about 6.5 hours.
4 Day Tour from Marrakech: The Two Routes Compared
| Book | Marrakech to Fes | Merzouga loop |
|---|---|---|
| Start and end | Marrakech → Fes | Marrakech → Marrakech |
| Night 1 | Dades Valley | Ouarzazate |
| Night 2 | Desert camp | Desert camp |
| Night 3 | Hotel facing the dunes | Dades Valley |
| Time in the desert | About 1.5 days | One evening and one sunrise |
| Longest day | Day 4, about 8 hours | Day 2, about 6 hours |
| Best for | Travelers continuing north or flying from Fes | Return flights from Marrakech |
In other words, the Fes route gives you more desert, while the loop gives you more variety on the road, because you go out through the Draa Valley and return through Todra and the Dades. If you only have three days, read our guide to the 3 day tour from Marrakech.
Route A: Day by Day from Marrakech to Fes
Day 1: The High Atlas, Ait Ben Haddou and the Dades Valley
First, you cross the High Atlas by the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 meters. Next, you explore the kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou. Then, you pass Ouarzazate and the Rose Valley and reach the Dades Valley for dinner. Expect about 7 hours of driving.
Day 2: Todra Gorge and the Merzouga camp
After breakfast, you walk along the river in Todra Gorge. Afterwards, you continue through Tinjdad and Erfoud to Merzouga, where a camel takes you into the Erg Chebbi dunes for sunset and dinner at the camp.
Day 3: A full desert day with nomads and Khamlia
This is the day that makes the 4-day route special. You wake for sunrise, then a 4×4 takes you to a nomad family for Berber tea and to Khamlia, a village known for Gnaoua music. In the afternoon, you see the palm groves and the seasonal lake, and you sleep in a hotel facing the dunes.
Day 4: Rissani, Midelt, the cedar forest and Fes
Finally, you visit Rissani and follow the Ziz Valley north. After lunch in Midelt, you cross the Tizi n’Talghemt pass and the cedar forest of Azrou, home to wild Barbary macaques, then reach Fes by early evening. Read more about this road in our guide from Fes to Merzouga.

Route B: Day by Day on the Merzouga Loop
Day 1: Telouet, the Ounila Valley and Ait Ben Haddou
First, you climb the Tizi n’Tichka pass. Then, instead of the main road, you follow the quiet Ounila Valley past the Glaoui kasbah of Telouet to Ait Ben Haddou. You sleep in Ouarzazate after only about 4.5 hours of driving.
Day 2: The Draa Valley, Nkob and the Merzouga camp
Next, you cross into the Draa Valley, a long ribbon of palm groves around Agdz, and drive east through Nkob and Alnif. In the late afternoon, you ride a camel to your camp in the dunes for sunset.
Day 3: Rissani, Todra Gorge and the Dades Valley
After sunrise, you visit the caravan town of Rissani, then walk through Todra Gorge. In the afternoon, you continue up the Dades Valley to see the “monkey fingers” rocks.
Day 4: The Rose Valley, Skoura and Marrakech
Lastly, you pass the Rose Valley, the Skoura palm grove and Ouarzazate, then cross the High Atlas again and reach Marrakech by early evening.
Why Four Days Instead of Three?
- Shorter driving days: on a 3-day loop, the last day can last 9 to 10 hours. On a 4-day tour, the longest day is shorter, so the trip feels relaxed.
- More time in the dunes: on the Fes route, you get a full day around Merzouga instead of a single evening.
- Better for families: children cope much better with shorter drives. Read our tips for Morocco with kids.
- More photo stops: you have time for viewpoints, kasbahs and villages without watching the clock.
4 Days or 5 Days?
A fourth day already removes most of the rush. Nevertheless, if you want a second night in the desert and slower mornings, the 5-day desert tour from Marrakech to Fes adds even more time around Merzouga. Compare all lengths in our guide to 5 day Morocco tours. On the other hand, if you start in Fes, the 4-day Merzouga and canyons loop from Fes is the mirror route.
Which Desert: Merzouga or Zagora?
Both of our 4-day tours go to Merzouga, because its Erg Chebbi dunes rise to about 150 meters and are far more impressive than the dunes near Zagora. With four days, the extra distance is easy to manage. Compare both deserts in Merzouga vs Zagora.
What Is Included in Our 4 Day Tours
All our tours are private. They include your own air-conditioned vehicle and driver, three nights of accommodation (hotels and a desert camp), the camel trek, and dinner and breakfast each night. Lunches, drinks and entrance fees are not included. Moreover, you can upgrade the camp: see our guide to the luxury desert camp in Merzouga, a favorite for couples planning a honeymoon in Morocco.
Best Time for a 4 Day Desert Tour
Spring and autumn offer warm days and mild nights. In summer, the heat is intense in the desert, so camel rides happen late in the day. In winter, days are sunny but nights are cold, and snow can briefly close the High Atlas passes. Read our guides to Morocco in winter and the best time to visit Morocco, or check the official Merzouga guide.
What to Pack
- A small overnight bag for the camp
- A warm jacket for the evenings and the sunrise
- A scarf and sunglasses against sand and sun
- Comfortable shoes for Todra Gorge and the dunes
- Cash for lunches, small purchases and tips
For the full list, read what to pack for the Morocco desert.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Booking the loop when you fly home from Fes: the one-way route saves you a long return.
- Skipping the full desert day: it is the best part of the Fes route, so do not cut it.
- Bringing big suitcases to the camp: large luggage stays in the vehicle.
- Forgetting warm clothes: desert nights are cool even in spring.
