12 Days in Morocco: The Complete Itinerary

Home Morocco tour packages 12 Days in Morocco: The Complete Itinerary

Planning 12 days in Morocco? Twelve days give you time to see the whole country at a relaxed pace: Marrakech, the High Atlas, the Sahara, Fes, the blue town of Chefchaouen and the Atlantic coast, with slow mornings and guided days in the medinas. This guide shares a complete day-by-day itinerary, other route options, driving times, the best season and practical tips.

Quick answer: a great 12-day route starts in Marrakech, crosses the High Atlas to the Sahara for two nights, continues to Fes and Chefchaouen, and returns along the coast through Rabat and Casablanca. If you love the sea, swap Rabat for a night in Essaouira. Either way, you see the south, the desert, the imperial cities and the north in one trip.

Is 12 Days in Morocco Enough?

Yes, 12 days is an excellent length. Compared with one week, you can add Chefchaouen, a second night in the desert and guided days in both Marrakech and Fes. Moreover, you can sleep two nights in several places, so the trip never feels like a race. However, Morocco is large, so a private driver still saves a lot of time between the desert and the cities.

12 Days in Morocco: A Complete Itinerary Day by Day

Day 1: Arrival in Marrakech

First, settle into a riad in the medina. In the evening, walk to Jemaa el-Fna square and enjoy the food stalls, the musicians and the storytellers.

Day 2: A Guided Day in Marrakech

Then, a licensed local guide shows you the Koutoubia, the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs and the souks. In the afternoon, you can visit the Majorelle Garden or relax in a hammam.

Day 3: The High Atlas, Ait Ben Haddou and the Dades Valley

Next, you cross the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 meters and explore the kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou. In the afternoon, you pass Ouarzazate and the Rose Valley to reach the Dades Valley.

Day 4: Todra Gorge and the Merzouga Camp

In the morning, you walk through Todra Gorge. In the late afternoon, you ride a camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes for sunset and sleep in a desert camp.

Day 5: A Full Day in the Sahara

After sunrise, a 4×4 takes you to nomad families, the village of Khamlia and its Gnaoua musicians, and the palm groves. As a result, the desert becomes more than a photo stop. The night is in a hotel facing the dunes.

Day 6: The Ziz Valley, the Middle Atlas and Fes

Today, you drive north through the Ziz Valley and the cedar forest of Azrou, home to wild Barbary macaques. It is the longest day, at about 8 hours, so read our guide from Fes to Merzouga for the details of this road.

Day 7: A Guided Day in Fes

A licensed local guide leads you through Fes el-Bali, with its madrasas, tanneries and craft quarters. Therefore, you understand a medina that is easy to get lost in alone.

Day 8: Volubilis, Meknes and Chefchaouen

After breakfast, you visit the Roman ruins of Volubilis and the imperial city of Meknes. In the afternoon, you climb into the Rif Mountains and reach Chefchaouen.

Day 9: A Free Day in Chefchaouen

Today, you explore the blue medina at your own pace, then walk up to the Spanish Mosque for sunset over the valley. Our Chefchaouen guide has more ideas.

Day 10: Chefchaouen to Rabat

Next, you drive to Rabat, the capital, and see the Kasbah of the Udayas, the Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V.

Day 11: Casablanca and the Return to Marrakech

In the morning, you visit the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, built partly over the ocean. Then, you drive south to Marrakech for your last night.

Day 12: Departure

Finally, enjoy a last coffee on a riad terrace before your transfer to Marrakech airport.

Other Ways to Spend 12 Days in Morocco

Add Essaouira and the coast

If you prefer the sea to the capital, replace Rabat with two nights in Essaouira on the way back to Marrakech. Its white medina, fishing port and ocean breeze are the perfect end to a long trip. Read our guide from Marrakech to Essaouira.

Start in Tangier

Arriving by ferry from Spain? Start in Tangier and Chefchaouen, then follow the same route in reverse: Fes, the Sahara, the kasbah road and Marrakech. See our guide from Tangier to Marrakech for the ferry ports.

Start in Casablanca

On the other hand, if you land at Casablanca airport, start with the Hassan II Mosque and Rabat, head north to Chefchaouen and Fes, cross the desert, and finish in Marrakech or back in Casablanca.

How Much Driving Is 12 Days in Morocco?

Expect about 1,800 to 2,000 km in total. Most days have 3 to 5 hours of driving, but the day from the Sahara to Fes takes about 8 hours. In addition, several days have no long drive at all, which keeps the trip relaxed.

Best Time for 12 Days in Morocco

Spring and autumn are ideal, with warm days and mild nights everywhere. In summer, the south is very hot, while the coast stays cool. In winter, the days are sunny, but the desert and the mountains are cold at night. See the best time to visit Morocco and our guide to Morocco in winter.

Getting Around and Where to Stay

A private driver is the easiest choice for 12 days, because the desert is far from the train network. However, you can mix transport: for example, take the fast train from Tangier to Casablanca if you start in the north. For hotels, choose riads in Marrakech, Fes and Chefchaouen, a kasbah hotel in the Dades Valley and a camp with private bathrooms in the desert.

What to Pack for 12 Days in Morocco

  • Light layers for the day and a warm jacket for the desert and the mountains
  • Comfortable walking shoes for the medinas
  • A light jacket for the windy coast
  • A small overnight bag for the desert camp
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a reusable water bottle

For the full list, see what to pack for the Morocco desert.

A Typical Day on a 12-Day Trip

Most days follow a simple rhythm. First, breakfast on the riad terrace around 8 a.m. Then, a morning drive of two or three hours, with photo stops and coffee in small towns. Next, a long lunch, often a tagine or grilled meat in a family restaurant. In the afternoon, you visit the main sight of the day, such as a kasbah, a gorge or a medina. Finally, you arrive before sunset, rest, and enjoy dinner where you sleep. On guided days in the cities, the pace is even slower. As a result, 12 days feel full without being tiring.

Tips for 12 Days in Morocco

  • Sleep twice in key places: two nights in Marrakech, Fes and Chefchaouen make the trip calmer.
  • Book guides in the medinas: a local guide in Marrakech and Fes is worth it.
  • Plan two desert nights: a camp and a hotel facing the dunes.
